Romain Laurent's L'Horizon captures a peaceful calm amongst a dense urban space.

5. Stephen Shore

Stephen Shore's work has been widely published and exhibited for the past thirty years. His career began at the early age of fourteen, when he made the precocious move of presenting his photographs to Edward Steichen, then curator of photography at MOMA. Recognizing Shore's talent, Steichen bought three of his works. At the age of 24 Shore became the first living photographer to have a one-man show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. He has also had one-man shows at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the George Eastman House, Rochester, and the Kunsthalle in Dusseldorf. He has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. His series of exhibitions at Light Gallery in New York in the early 1970's sparked new interest in color photography and in the use of the view camera for documentary work.

Most recently, Stephen Shore has photographed a fashion story with world renowned stylist Venetia Scott for Another Magazine (Spring 06). Campaigns include Bottega Veneta S/S 06, Orange 2004/5 & Titleist 2004. A regular contributor to W Magazine he's also picked up an SPD Gold Medal for a photo story in Details Magazine about a minor league baseball team.

Books of his photographs include Uncommon Places; The Gardens at Giverny; Stephen Shore: Luzzara; The Velvet Years, Andy Warhol’s Factory, 1965-1967; Stephen Shore: Photographs, 1973-1993; and American Surfaces, 1972. In 1998, Johns Hopkins University Press published The Nature of Photographs, a book he wrote about how photographs function visually. Since 1982 he has been the chairman of the photography program at Bard College where he is the Susan Weber Soros Professor in the Arts. He is represented by 303 Gallery in New York City.

9. Ulrika Kestere - The girl with 7 horses

Once upon a time there was a girl who had 7 invisible horses. People thought she was crazy and that she in fact had 7 imaginary horses, but this was not the case. When autumn came the girl spent a whole day washing all her clothes. She hung them on a string in her garden to let the gentle autumn sun dry them. Out of nowhere, a terrible storm came and its fiercefull winds grabbed a hold of all her clothes and all seven horses (authors note: since they are invisible they obviously didn't weigh much). The girl was devestated and spent all autumn looking for each horse spread around the country, wrapped in her clothes.

10. Richard Kilroy

Composition, suggestion and simplicity are the driving forces behind Richard's work. Practising illustration from an early age, Richard was mentored during his college years by acclaimed artist Dave White. Graduating from Leeds College of Art & Design in 2010, he currently resides in London.

in late 2010 he was selected by Christian Dior as one of five illustrators to produce an original work for 'Dior illustrated', an exhibition of the work and collaborative effort of Rene Gruau and the house of Dior. His newspaper fanzine on fashion illustration, DECOY, includes the work of Julie Verhoeven, Richard Gray, Jasper Goodall, Cedric Rivrain, Tara Dougans, Si Scott and more. The second issue is currently available and issue 3 will be available from November 2011.

To date, Richard's clients include Christian Dior, VMAN, Topshop, Onitsuka Tiger, Ponystep, Husk, I.T Post and more.

Audrey Flack holds a graduate degree and an honorary doctorate from Cooper Union in New York City, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Yale University. She attended New York University's Institute of Fine Arts where she studied the history of art.

She was awarded the St. Gaudens Medal from Cooper Union, and the honorary Albert Dome professorship from Bridgeport University. She is an honorary professor at George Washington University, and is currently a visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

Audrey Flack has taught and lectured extensively both nationally, and internationally.

A pioneer of Photorealism and a nationally recognized painter and sculptor, Ms. Flack's work is in the collections of major museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and Whitney Museum of American Art and the National Museum of Art in Canberra, Australia. She was the first photorealist painter to have work purchased by the Museum of Modern Art.

Throughout her career, Ms. Flack's work has been featured in numerous traveling museum exhibitions, including "Twenty-two Realists" (1972) at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; "Super Realism" (1975-76) at the Baltimore Museum of Art; "American Painting of the Seventies" (1979) at the Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, NY; Contemporary American Realism" (1981-83) at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia; Toyama Now, 1981" (1981) at the Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, Japan; and "Making Their Mark: Women Artists Move into the Mainstream"(1989) which traveled to the Cincinnati Art Museum, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Denver Art Museum and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Ms. Flack has also held numerous solo exhibitions including at the Roko Gallery, New York; French & Company, New York; and the Louis K. Meisel Gallery, New York, among others.

A major retrospective of her work organized by the J.B. Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky has traveled to four museums around the country during 1992-93.

There are numerous books on her work. The most recent being "Breaking the Rules" by Thalia Gouma Peterson, published by the Abrams Publishing Company in New York.

Among her public commissions are a Monumental Gateway to the city of Rock Hill, South Carolina, consisting of four twenty-foot high bronze figures on granite pedestals, and Islandia, a nine-foot high bronze sculpture for the New York City technical college in Brooklyn New York.

Audrey Flack lives and works in New York City and Long Island.

Known for his watercolors of discarded Utopian dreams Russell's work now enters a new chapter in his expanding narrative, depicting figures that can be seen as one step farther down the road of disillusionment. Nachman uses the trappings of Black Metal culture to portray a harlequin for our time. The Black Metal tradition is one of contradictions, steeped in rebellion and hedonism, yet seeking absurdly antiquated notions of purity and truth. Nachman's modern day jesters, seen as buffoons of Black Metal, become unwitting relaters of an unspoken truth -- the folly behind all our masks.

7. vacuum-sealed Couples by Hal

Tokyo-based artist photographer hal has created the 'flesh love' series. his body of work explores the concept of worldly love through couples. in 'flesh love', hal pulls the lovers so near to one another that they transform into a single being - a vacuum-sealed pack of love.

The artist wraps blankets the models with a plastic sheet in which he removes the air from to bond the lover together. Hal is able to capture several photos in the few moments the couple is sealed within
the plastic encasement. the series is now available in a book compilation and an ipad application.

'I go to kabukicho in shinjuku, underground bars in shibuya and many other places which are full of activity like luscious night time bee-hives. when i see a couple of interest i will begin to negotiate. i’m sure that many people initially think of my proposal as unusual or even look through me like i am completely invisible, but i always push forward with my challenge to them.

9. Sacha Goldberger - Before and After Shots of Joggers

Last summer, Sacha Goldberger decided he would take on a very interesting project. He assembled a team who helped him create an outdoor studio at Bois de Boulogne, a park located near Paris that's 2 1/2 times the size of New York's Central Park. He stopped joggers, asking them for a favor - would they sprint for him and then pose right after for his camera? Many obliged. Out of breath, these joggers showed an overwhelming amount of fatigue on their faces.

Goldberger then asked these same people to come into his professional studio exactly one week later. Using the same light, he asked them to pose the same way they had before.

"I wanted to show the difference between our natural and brute side versus how we represent ourselves to society," Goldberger tells us. "The difference was very surprising."

Melbourne based Illustrator & Designer Ken Taylor works primarily within the music industry and is predominantly well known for his striking rock posters. Ken started in Perth Western Australia doing posters and album artwork for local bands. In 2001 He moved to Melbourne and slowly started to create a name for himself within Melbourne’s music scene. In 2006 he went out on his own and started to work full time on music based artwork.

Ken has designed posters and album artwork for many Australian bands including You Am I & The Beasts of Bourbon & Crowded House. Internationally he has designed artwork for bands such Queens of the Stone Age, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, Kings of Leon, Bob Dylan & The Rolling Stones. Ken has won the Desktop Create Award for Best illustration in both 2007 & 2009 and was a Guest Speaker at the 2009 AGIDEAS design conference and the 2011 Semi – Permanent Creative Conference in both Melbourne and Perth. Ken continues to work with bands both locally and internationally and is represented by Drawing Book.

3. Locomotive - Place des Arts

“Locomotive”, the most recent addition to the mosaic screen installation in the foyer of Place des Arts, is a fantastical portrayal of a human machine.

The context resembles an elaborate organic dominos game. It begins with a musical impulse and is accompanied by an inexorable advancement of light.

Human flesh makes up a patchwork of glittering metallic members – which have the luster of new pistons and bolts – engendering a hybrid mass.

Caught in awkward tension, the bodies quiver in suspension, the movement becoming increasingly intense until released by the passing impulse.

The carefully synchronized three-dimensional chain reaction of image, sound and light dehumanizes the body while simultaneously makes us smile. Uncomfortable yet intrigued, the eye of the passer cannot turn away from the machine. The complexity of the work lies in its ambiguity of being funny, monstrous, and sensual all at the same time.

The totality of this intriguing puzzle is best seen by taking a step back. However, in order to observe and appreciate the detail of the movement, it is equally engaging to advance forward. Each gear, wheel and suture plays its role to tie the whole piece together.
For this project, in lieu of creating a work that is intrinsically promotional, Place des Arts has taken the risk of acting as a sponsor and distributor of this purely artistic and cinematic endeavor.

Conceived with the intention of using the proposed space – its limitations and constraints – in the pursuit giving life to a custom made creation, “Locomotive” highlights the artistic potential of the mosaic screens in the foyer.

4. Taxi Driver Sweded by Michel Gondry

Michel Gondry is sweding it up again. The French auteur first popularized the sweding of things (see: Swede Fest) with his 2008 film, "Be Kind Rewind," which encouraged the audience to swede their favorite films. What on earth is sweding, you say? How many times can we possibly say swede before telling you what it is? (Six times.) To swede is to create a fan-made, low-budget rethinking of a popular film. It's all about showing your love for a movie you love for people who love it. It does not have to do with Swedish people.

Gondry sweded the trailer of his own film (self-love?), "Be Kind Rewind," back in 2008. This time, he tackles "Taxi Driver," assuming the role of Travis Bickle himself. Gondry's version includes a sweet (sounds like swede!) take on "Are you talkin' to me?", vomit that comes out looking like pastel paint and colored pencil bullets.

Born in 1971, Belgian photographer Willy Vanderperre studied fashion & photography at the Royal Academy of Arts in Antwerp. He then went on to build his name with regular contributions to prestigious magazines like Arena Homme+, AnOther Magazine, AnOther Man, i-D, Fantastic Man, Love, V, VMan, and many others. He’s also done campaigns for Raf Simons, Jil Sander, Fred Perry, Givenchy, and Aquascutum.

6. Tjalf Sparnaay

Tjalf Sparnaay is a Netherlands-born, London-based artist whose oil paintings are ridiculously hyper-realistic. When I first saw these images I assumed they were photographs. Sparnaay is an expert at taking everyday, throwaway items such as discarded Cola cans and a bag of chips, removing the items from their environment, and turning them into textured works of art, no shadow, wrinkle or crevice overlooked. Sparnaay calls his style “Mega-Realism.”

8. Yuko Shimizu

Drawing had been Yuko's hobby ever since she could remember. However, growing up in a traditional Japanese family, pursuing a path in art was just not an option. After receiving BA in advertising and marketing – the most creative of the practical field – from Waseda University she landed on a position in PR for a big corporation in Tokyo.
It never made her quite happy, and she was in a mid-life crisis at age of 22.

It still took Yuko more than 10 years of office job before she figured out what she really wanted to do and to save just enough so she could go back to school full time for 4 more years.
This is how Yuko came back to New York in 1999, where she briefly spent her childhood, and enrolled in School of Visual Arts (SVA).

Yuko graduated with MFA from Illustration as Visual Essay Program in 2003 and has been illustrating since. She also teaches a BFA Illustration course and occasionally advises MFA students at SVA.
She works in a studio in Manhattan, a space she shares with two artists whom she considers as her 'New York family'. Yuko has not gotten into mid-life crisis since she became an artist.

Whenever she has time, Yuko loves to travel to different cities and countries to lectures at art schools and events, and to meet with other artists, professors and young aspiring illustrators to get inspired.

2. Bharat Sikka

Bharat Sikka (b 1973) grew up and then worked as a photographer in India before deciding to study at the Parson's School of Design where he earned a BFA in photography. Establishing a fine art approach to the field of photography, as an art form Bharat documents contemporary visions of India. His portfolio consists of environmental portraits of “Indian men”, “Urban landscapes” in India and a personal project on his family. Since his first exhibition "Indian Men" at the Artists Space in NYC, his work has been displayed in numerous national and international exhibitions, including one at the National Museum of India (2008). Bharat has contributed for magazines and publications such as the New Yorker, I.D, Vogue, Vogue Homme International, Details and Time Magazine, where his work was featured as amongst the best photographs of 2005. Hello, my name is Andre De Freitas and I'm a photographer and illustrator. I studied in Full Sail University and got a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Animation. But oddly enough, the concept of stillness captured my imagination, and I focused more on illustration. Instead of just drawing, I tried to imagine myself taking photos of my subjects. That way the illusion of stillness would be a little more believable, almost like a photograph. After that, my insertion into the world of photography was almost based on instinct.

Micah Ganske was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1980. In 2002 he received his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Post-Baccalaureate certificate from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2003. In 2005 he received his MFA in painting from the Yale School of Art. In 2005 he was the recipient of the Adobe Design Achiement Award in Digital Photography at a reception held at the Guggenheim Museum in New York where his work was also displayed. In October 2007 Deitch Projects exhibited Ganske's first solo exhibition. In 2011 he launched his second solo exhibition with RH Gallery in Tribeca, where he is now represented.

About:
In my work I am exploring the relationship between humans and animals; the idea of the human denial of our animal nature and of humans as the dominant species, as well as the mutation of the animal created by the human interpretation of the animal. My work alludes to the boundaries that separate humanity from animals both physically and metaphysically, as well as the objectification of and personification of animals. I invent creatures, anthropomorphic, mutated, or pseudo mythical in imagery, using my imaginary world and bringing it into the physical world in an attempt to create a language that speaks about the human animal relationship and the natural and unnatural elements of it. I am faced with the fact that we live in a planet in decline, where almost every natural ecosystem in the world is slipping away. Human kind has created a planet of refugees; animals forced to flee ever farther from the insatiable encroachment of urban development, victims of a war for space which they cannot hope to win. My drawings refer to this decline and to the refugees it has created. I am left with the question of what is natural; are we (human beings) still a part of nature? If so, does that make all that we have created, cities, vehicles, factories, all technology, part of nature as well? As we move into an increasingly plastic, electronic, and robotic culture how can we define our own fundamental nature as the nature of the world around us changes and our metaphysical identity evolves into something beyond the human as an animal? As we separate from our animal nature, will we be able to still see and understand the importance of other animals and our relationship to them? As we are able to remove ourselves from our own physical bodies and to come to experience life through the metaphysical, the digital, and the psychic, how will this distance from our own bodies and the physical experience of the world affect our relationship with nature and the way we see creatures who exist completely within their physical bodies and are defined by their physical needs?
As my work evolves I am beginning to think more and more about the way in which people bestow identity and how, deprived of identity, animals are reduced to a kind of living taxidermy subject to human apathy and mutated by human ideals of beauty or monstrosity. I am telling a story about disappearance and the rapid and extravagant destruction of the human-animal, and how this loss of our animal nature is affecting the way human kind views the animal world.
I am describing these questions through the use of paper and ink in the form of life sized anthropomorphic creatures, which are installation pieces. Done entirely in ballpoint pen, ink, watercolor and colored pencil, these massive creatures are a balance between the power and physical presence of the life sized and the intensity of the dense, delicate, and time consuming detail of the ballpoint pen and ink. By installing these animals cut out on the walls they are released into our world and become characters that must be addressed in terms of our physical space, and must be granted an identity.

7. The Bicycle Animation

Katy Beveridge About the project:

This is a piece created to question whether it was possible to film animation in realtime. Part of my CSM 3rd year disseration project I was looking at proto animation (really early basic animation) in contemporary design. I've taken a lot of influence from other contemporary designers who are using these techniques to explore the way we look at animation and how its made. As stated on my channel I have interviewed animators such as Jim le Fevre and in my research referenced other people using this technique such as David Wilson and Tim Wheatley who did this before me. I developed this project based on what is being done in animation right now as well as a lot of primary research into the history of animation techniques.

Big Thanks to my friend Stefan Neidermeyer who did the sound. The soundtrack is made up of various bike noies recorded during the filming process which Stef then remixed to make the amazing soundtrack.

8. Tiger & Turtle – Magic Mountain

The walkable, large outdoor sculpture Tiger & Turtle – Magic Mountain is currently in construction on the Heinrich Hildebrand Höhe in Duisburg Wanheim (D). It overtops the plateau with the artificially heaped-up mountain by 21m | 23yd so the visitor can rise by more than 45m | 49yd above the level of the landscape and enjoy an impressive view over the Rhine.
The curved flight of stairs inscribes like a signature on the landscape and recruits the nimbus of the classical roller coaster. Having a closer look, the public is disappointed in a disarming way. The visitor climbs on foot via differently steep steps the roller-coaster-sculpture. So the sculpture subtly and ironically plays with the dialectic of promise and disappointment, mobility and standstill.

8. Frieke Janssens

Titled “The beauty of an ugly addiction”, photographer Frieke Janssens confronts viewers with questions about the general smoking ban introduced in Belgium some months ago. Surrealistic, melancholic and theatrical but especially controversial pictures of smoking kids are used to visualise the contradiction of the unhealthy cigarette and the immense attraction of smoking.

The children, aged four to nine, are shameless posing while enjoying their cigarette or cigarillo. So why kids? By portraying adults as children all the attention went to the smoking. An adult would draw to much attention to the portrayed person. Thus these portraits evoke question such as: is the smoking ban the right way to get rid of an absurd addiction and are smokers treated like little kids who can’t make the difference between good and bad? While Frieke doesn’t give answers, the portraits are strong enough to start your thinking process!

Frieke got the idea after seeing a youtube movie in which a two year old Indonesian boy smokes up to 40 cigarettes a day. It struck her that the reactions on this youthfull smoker were culturally stipulated: Americans reacted shocked while Indonesians and the parents of the little boy saw the smoking habit as something normal.

At an early age it was apparent King didn't fit in societies design. School was always an up hill battle, but was tolerated for the chance to participate in art classes or any other creative outlet they would provide. Native to southern California he grew up skating the streets of Long beach and it's surrounding cities.

After high school he was forced to join the working class, doing odd jobs at skate shops and anything that required manual labor. Bored, tired and broke the seedy underbelly of life's desires reared it's ugly head and anything but the right decision was made.

Sometimes hitting rock bottom is what it takes to discover what you live for, art and skateboarding became salvation. After only a few semesters at his local junior collage it became apparent that illustration and design was going to become his career.

Joe wishes he would have found the answer sooner but like in creating art, or what ever the media, it's the process which should be the most enjoyable. Since 2005 joe has been taking his work more serious, and working with iconic brands such as KR3W, Crooks N Castles and OBEY and even ran his own label for a few years. Outside his intricate illustration world he still finds time to hit the stunt wood and is preparing to become a new father, thats a whole new chapter.

4. Slavery Footprint

MUH-TAY-ZIK | HOF-FER and Unit 9 London partner with Call + Response and the U.S. State Department to raise awareness about slavery today. The site, called "Made in a Free World" allows you track how many slaves work for you, based on how many where you live, items of clothing you have, what you eat, gadgets you own and so on.

An accompanying app lets consumers encourage brands to investigate how many slaves are used in their own supply chain operations. A geo-location element allows you to check-in to the app while you shop at these stores, and over a 1,000 Facebook pages will show how each store and brand is doing on the slavery front. Consumers that take the survey and work on encouraging brands to look into their practices will also win "Free World" points.

The global slave trade is estimated to be over 27 million people working in supply chains for global products to create products like iPhones, cameras and running shoes. Often, the campaign says, major brands aren't even aware of the slavery footprint present in their own supply chains.

I was raised in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in one of the poorest city neighborhoods. It has been described as "Appalachia in the city". I've had my back fractured by baseball bats, been picked on, and did too many drugs before I was 14 and then dropped out of High School in the 10th grade. It wasn't until 3+ years ago that I picked up a camera after a decade of living in a small town in the remote Adirondack Mountains and decided to mix my memories with imagination.

The cinematic style of my work intentionally mimics a society full of oversaturation to TV, cinema, youtube, video games, and more. The images pull inspiration from the most basic elements of human emotion; fear, sex, abandonment, and curiosity to name a few. The moments of each image are fleeting and never exact, but hold an untold story of what happened before and what will happen after. It is up to the viewer to decide how far or how comfortable they feel delving into them or even sympathizing with them.

Filippo Del Vita and Laura Garcia Serventi met while studying at the prestigious Center for Contemporary Photography "Fondazione Studio Marangoni" in Florence.

Filippo born and raised in Italy had been early introduced to photography by his grandfather and Laura, Argentinean, became interested in the medium when attending the School of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires.

Ever since they met, a profound collaboration grew between them.

Their Italian years were mostly devoted to art. Their work has been selected by numerous awards and exhibited at the Triennale of Milan, the Contemporary Art Fair Artissima, the Biennale in Reus Spain, the Fotofestiwal in Poland, the Lodz Festival in Lithuania and the Italian Foundation of Photography just to mention a few. Meanwhile they also started working on fashion and still life projects and their work is regularly used for advertising and published in American and International magazines.

They live and work between Milan and New York where they founded Effelle Photography.

"Over the last five years Sylvie Zijlmans has created photo works of an intimate world in which something unspeakable has taken place. Mysterious events that are certainly possible but highly improbable. Bacteria are spat back and forth across the table. Smoke rises from mugs, glasses and bottles. The people in these images have witnessed something terrifying. They confront us menacingly, like giants. Though greatly enlarged these photo works are extremely sharp. In combination with the method of presentation - sometimes merely a loosely suspended backlit transparency - this sharpness is confronting and alienating. Zijlmans' oeuvre is contentious, experimental, and creative. it teems with the ideas and multiple associations.

Sylvie Zijlmans' extraordinary visual eloquence has led to her being invited to participation Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen's H&F Mecenaat, a patronage program that allows the museum to collect and exhibit the work of internationally important contemporary artists. I would like to thank the artist for her commitment to this project. The museum is greatly indebted to its patron Han Nefkens who has made both the exhibition and publication possible through his financial support".
