9. Giuseppe Randazzo

novastructura is maintained by Giuseppe Randazzo, a designer from Turin (Italy). This site wants to be an open and evolving place where to share my works and experiments as well interests on several topics, ranging from generative art, new-media art and contemporary art, to architecture, coding, science, tech, and so on. The meaning and the reason of novastructura may be seen as the need to explore the blurred boundary between art and science. The site for this purpose is divided in two parts, the personal works database (generative related) and a blog where I will try to collect - through my personal point of view - the most meaningful suggestions coming from the net about the above topics.
All my works presented here are licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.5 Italy (CC BY-NC-ND 2.5) License. Here the italian version.
The blog's policy about published works is strictly in finding and in clearly showing the work's author and original source. The authors may request at any time to remove their content, I will provide as soon as possible.

Description:
This project has started from a search for a 3d-objects optimal packing algorithm over a surface, but evolved in something rather different. I love the work by Richard Long, from which this project takes its cue. The way he fills lonely landscapes with arcaic stones patterns and its eroic artistic practice, in his monumental vision, is in strong contrast with this computational approach that - ironically - allows virtual stones creation and sorting in a non phisical, mental way, a 'lazy' version, so to speak. The virtual stones created by several fractal subdivision strategies, find their proper position within the circle, with a trial and error hierarchical algorythm. A mix of attractors and scalar fields (some with Perlin noise) drives the density and size of the stones. The code is a C++ console application that outputs a OBJ 3d file.

4. Santtu Mustonen - Non Animation Work

Santtu joined Pekka in late 2009 shortly after exhibiting his works at Illustrative09 in Berlin. It was while working as an industrial designer that he became interested in using 3D techniques to create illustrations. Santtu creates animated computer-generated illustrations which he refers to as slightly moving images. Santtu's recent projects include an interactive piece for Adobe as well as an outdoor campaign for Helsingin Sanomat, the largest daily newspaper in the Nordic countries.

10. Shotopop

DESCRIPTION:
Shotopop recently teamed up with JWT Shanghai to take cardboard cut-outs to the next level. The project won us an Outdoor, as well as a Design Lion at the International Cannes Lions Awards 2011.

We were asked to help develop and build 3 pieces, made up from the cardboard of ANTA shoe-boxes, to represent 3 prominent Chinese Basketball players, sponsored by ANTA.

The "Chinese Beast", Li Xiaoxu's playing style is fast, fearless and powerful. His sculpture, made up predominantly from elements of wings, feathers and lightning, shows exactly that.

With exceptional low post skills, Tang Zhengdong is an "Irremovable pillar in the sea", which indicates an ancient Chinese proverb for hero. The spiral staircase of courts represents his rise in the CBA, from the young age of 16

Zhou Peng has already won 6 CBA Championships, represented by the golden stars on his sculpture. His relentless defences and explosive ferocity makes him a force to be reckoned with.

8. Andrew Meyers

California-based artist Andrew Meyers drives thousands screws at various depths, creating unique 3D images. Once the screws are in at the correct depth, (from 7,000 to 10,000 holes by hand) he paints over each head individually to create the finished product, which looks more like a portrait than a sculpture.

5. Making Future Magic: iPad light painting

This film explores playful uses for the increasingly ubiquitous ‘glowing rectangles’ that inhabit the world.

We use photographic and animation techniques that were developed to draw moving 3-dimensional typography and objects with an iPad. In dark environments, we play movies on the surface of the iPad that extrude 3-d light forms as they move through the exposure. Multiple exposures with slightly different movies make up the stop-frame animation.

5. Chris Nixon

This work is by designer Chris Nixon, who, although still only a student at John Moores University in Liverpool, develops his pieces through in-depth conceptual processes; analyzing the content thoroughly and developing forms that create strong and lasting impressions. Although he is certainly adept at taking on just about any objective, its Chris’s work with type – in particular, creating experimental type-forms – that truly captured my attention… and delivered that much needed inspiration!

8. Strata #3 – Bordeaux [Processing]

The Strata project by Quayola consist of a series of films, prints and installations investigating improbable relationships between contemporary digital aesthetics and icons of classical art and architecture. A combination of 3d render/processing application, the film includes Processing delaunay triangulation conversion applied to photographic stills with 3D mesh output which was then fed into 3D software application and rendered separately.

The term Strata defines a geological formation made of multiple layers of rock. Each one of these layers has its own individual characteristics and history, which combined produce beautiful and unique formations…

Commissioned by Evento and Lumin for the Bordeaux Art & Architecture Biennale.

Santtu Mustonen brings together illustration and animation in a wonderfully bizarre manner. We at B/D are totally digging his “slightly moving illustrations”!

4. Meredith Dittmar

Meredith Dittmar is an artist living and playing in Portland OR. Born near Boston Mass, she grew up in a world of pet pigs, horses, hay-forts and spy games . Follow this with an education in computer science, a career in interactive design, a compulsive need to create, and a drive to Seek and you get the major elements of her person and work.

Dittmars human-animal-plant-energy amalgams contain threads of common elements and colors to express deep levels of union across themes of biology, technology, and consciousness . Her characters are frequently involved in quiet expressive moments, or lounge facing their audience so they can share their inner space. Dittmar believes it is this space we recognize in ourselves, and through convening in that space, the interconnectedness of all things is revealed. She sees the act of spontaneous artistic creation as part of a larger practice of being present, and a way to better understand herself and reality.

Dittmars work is featured in the books Dot dot Dash and Mascotte 2, along with numerous magazines and online publications. In conjunction with her artwork she works as an independent character designer and maintains her company Corporatepig, through which she continues to create thousands of unique handmade characters called "My Guys".
