Toby Morris is a New Zealand born, Amsterdam based illustrator, art director, comic artist and designer. He is a former member of the band Batrider, former editor and publisher of Officer Pup, former artist and writer of the comic series Pirate Technics, and a current father of one. He drew, published and nationally distributed his first comic at age 13 and since then has illustrated projects for magazines like Q, The Listener and Metro, as well as commercial clients like Heineken, Lego and EA Games. He has drawn two books, over twenty comics and worked extensively within the New Zealand music industry, drawing posters and covers for the likes of Connan Mockasin, Liam Finn, A Low Hum and Flying Nun records.
Toby currently works as an art director at Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam but likes to keep multiple personal projects on the go as well as taking on illustration commissions. In 2010 he published the book Alledaags: A Year In Amsterdam and is currently working on the follow up, a personal account of his first year of parenting here.
His background in comics and his time as an art director have honed a strong sense of storytelling in his illustration work. He has a strong sense of colour and clarity and enjoys character design, hand typography and world building.
