2. Gwon Osang

These sculptures by Korean artist Gwon Osang are made from hundreds of photographs of the original subjects, overlayed onto life-sized mannequins to create an effect which is both realistic and surreal at the same time.

3. Owen Gildersleeve

About Owen:
Owen Gildersleeve is a designer and illustrator based in London. He graduated from The University of Brighton in 2008, and has since worked for a range of international clients. His work explores both 2D and 3D styles, and he finds great enjoyment in experimenting with new materials and techniques.

Dennis Liu graduated from The Taft School and from NYU majoring in film. After working a short stint as a copywriter intern at BBDO upon graduation, he was hired fulltime by Saatchi & Saatchi NY as a Director/Producer. Dennis has shot and directed several spots, videos, and promos all over the United States. He's gotten nods from Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, AICP (MOMA), and The One Show. In 2008, he shot a Superbowl Viral for Miller High Life. He currently works at BBDO in Broadcast Production.

5. Jessica Hische

Jessica Hische is a typographer and illustrator working in Brooklyn, New York. After graduating from Tyler School of Art with a degree in Graphic Design, she worked for Headcase Design in Philadelphia before taking a position as Senior Designer at Louise Fili Ltd. While working for Louise, she continued developing her freelance career, working for clients such as Tiffany & Co., Chronicle Books, and The New York Times. In September of 2009, after two and a half years of little sleep and a lot of hand-lettering, she left Louise Fili to pursue her freelance career further. Jessica has been featured in most major design and illustration publications including Communication Arts, Print Magazine, How Magazine, The Graphis Design Annual, American Illustration and the Society of Illustrators. She was featured as one of Step Magazine’s 25 Emerging Artists, Communication Arts “Fresh”, Print Magazine’s New Visual Artists 2009 (commonly referred to as Print’s 20 under 30), and The Art Directors Club Young Guns.

8. Ran Ortner

THE ARTIST:
Ran Ortner was born in 1959 in San Francisco and lived along the areas rugged coast just north of Half Moon Bay – the home of Mavericks (one of the world’s biggest and most dangerous surfable waves). At the age of 5, the Ortner’s set off from the Half Moon Bay airstrip in their 1947 rag-wing Cessna to move to Alaska. In Alaska the Ortner’s built a log cabin, had no running water, a wood fire for heat and a grass airstrip for a driveway. To escape the brutal winters, Ran and his family would take their single engine plane on 3-4 month adventures from Alaska to South America.

The adventure of Ran’s unconventional childhood was in large part because of a deranged father. Ran found his escape racing motorcycles. The abandon reverie he found in racing opened a door. As he says “On my motorcycle I felt to be dancing with the gods.” When injures ended his racing he turned to the sea. Moving back to California at 18 he began big wave surfing. Surfing the coast of California and Mexico he considered his next move. Filled with a wonder at the dynamic conditions of life, Ran realized his need to make art. Ran has been living and working in New York City since 1990.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
In my art, I contemplate collisions of opposites, from the most tender brutalities to the most devastating sensitivities. These paradoxes register within me and I can see myself within them. I am continually surprised by the reflection between me, as an individual, and the environment within which I exist. As Robert Lax said, "The blood within and the brine without."

I often think about Rollo May’s idea that "sustained intensity equals ecstasy." Every day I enter my studio, prepare my materials and, as James Joyce said, "go for the millionth time to encounter the reality of experience." I find that sustaining the encounter with life’s biting reality is not "miserablism," but rather intense engagement. The undeniable union of life and death is not dire but majestic as evidensed by the inevitable crash of each cresting wave. In a tempest, distinctions blur registering in me as the rhythm of life's dance. Life’s beauty is magnificent as it hangs at the edge of death, insisting upon its relevance.

10. Sean Stiegemeier - Stop motion of Eyjafjallajökull

Sean on Eyjafjallajökull:
So I saw all of these mediocre pictures of that volcano in Iceland nobody can pronounce the name of, so I figured I should go and do better. But the flights to get over took forever as expected (somewhat). 4 days after leaving I finally made it, but the weather was terrible for another 4. Just before leaving it got pretty good for about a day and a half and this is what I managed to get.

Wish I had more time. I missed all the cool Lightning and the Lava of the first eruption. But I figure this will just be a trial run for another day. I am of course accepting sponsors to send me back there for more please...!! haha
