Now living in New York City, Portland, Oregon born Adrian Gaut took up photography after originally studying as a painter. As a student he found inspiration in the rich tradition of minimalism in 20th century painting, which informed his early photographic explorations of architecture. While his architectural work still rests at the foundation of his oeuvre, his subject matter now encompasses anything and everything from cars, planes and spaceships to landscapes, still life and portraits. Despite the wildly diverse assignments, there remains a dedication to the power and graphic simplicity established in those early photographs.
Always looking for a new adventure, Adrian has travelled around the world for a diverse group of clients such as HSBC, Stella Artois, Starbucks, The New York Times magazine, Wallpaper*, Case da Abitare, Wired, Japanese Vogue, GQ China, Newsweek, Monocle and many others. Some recent highlights include being the first photographer to shoot the new Virgin Galactic commercial space program in Mojave, CA., a trip to the wilds of central Brazil to photograph the burgeoning art collection/museum at Inhotim and photographing the ruggedly beautiful north shore of Kauai for a personal project. While not behind the lens, his passion for all things well-crafted finds him obsessing over japanese woodworking, vintage Volkswagens, old tools and home baked bread.
